You’ve Made It Home – Now What?

A guide to your first 24 hours at home postpartum

Bringing your baby home is a milestone moment — and yet, it can feel more overwhelming than magical. After all the anticipation, adrenaline, and emotional intensity of birth, walking through your front door with your newborn in your arms can leave you wondering: What now?

These first 24 hours are tender, raw, and often unpredictable. Here’s what to expect — and how to care for yourself as you settle into this new chapter.

1. Hormones, Hormones, Hormones

Your hormone levels take a sharp dip after birth, which can leave you feeling emotionally fragile, drained, or even a little shell-shocked. It’s not just you — this is totally normal. Be gentle with yourself and allow space to cry, laugh, or feel nothing at all.

2. The Hunger is Real

Birth is a marathon, and your body needs fuel to heal. Keep snacks and water within reach (yes, even while feeding). This isn’t the time for restraint — nourish your body like the powerhouse it is.

3. There Will Be Blood

Bleeding after birth (also called lochia) is completely normal — and yes, it happens even after a C-section. It tends to be heaviest in the first few days and can increase after breastfeeding. Pads, not tampons, are your best friend right now.

4. Let’s Talk About Poo

Your first bowel movement might take a little time and feel uncomfortable. Stool softeners can help, as can staying hydrated and relaxed. Deep breaths — it will pass.

5. Any Activity is Too Much Activity

Even small tasks can feel monumental in those first 24 hours. Resist the urge to tidy up or play host. This is your permission slip to rest, recover, and do absolutely nothing but exist and bond with your baby.

6. Hang In There

These early hours can be emotional whiplash. One moment you’re in awe, the next you’re in tears. Just take it moment by moment. This foggy, fragile phase will pass — we promise.

7. You’ve Got This

Even when it feels like you don’t, you do. You were made for this — not to be perfect, but to show up with love, patience, and softness for yourself.
